A excellent piece of kit.

I actually bought this mitre saw in 2016 and wrote this actual review about a year later but never got around to posting it though nothing regarding my opinion of it has changed. After doing much in-depth research to find the best value saw suitable for my needs at that time and having owned Metabo power tools in the past, on the strength of that I purchased this saw at the beginning of the 2016 and started using in April.Since then I've used it daily and have done literally many thousands of cuts with it when building among other things, a large double shed with it and it has behaved absolutely flawlessly and an excellent purchase indeed.Once trimmed and squared up it gives excellent results and performs on par with most of the professionally rated machines that I've used over the years and I would consider this Metabo well above the average DIY machine. There is no discernible blade wobble and I can trim off precise fractions of a mm cleanly which is the standard I like to work to. The bearings in the arm allow for a smooth action and angle adjustment is both secure and precise and the depth of cut is first class for a machine of this price and it slices through 75mm timber with no effort. I also use the machine to cut dados...this is easy to set up, adjust and switch back to normal with a single pull or push of a simple lever. The machine doesn't have a soft start so it's rather lively when it kicks into action due to the powerful motor so you have got to keep the saw blade clear of the work piece on start-up but it's certainly no deal breaker for me and once you get used to the kick, the machine is a doddle to use and never struggles..The only irritant that I have found is that the sliding part of the fence which is needed when compound mitering continually works loose but other than that it's an excellent machine. Once or twice the laser/light haven't worked but it was only occasional and normal service was soon resumed so it was never going to be a deal breaker as i don't use lasers as they are too inaccurate for me personally.I don't usually use a dust extractor so there's bound to be a bit of dust around as no machines are perfect on this one but keeping the dust collecting bag regularly emptied goes a long way to limiting dust.I use my machine mounted on an appropriate extending Titan mitre saw stand, it's a perfect match especially with the machine's pull out extension wings...far better than clamping it to a workmate. My machine was cutting perfectly vertical but very slightly out of square ( front to back) when I first got it but it's relatively easy to correct, in fact all saws of this type should be checked for accuracy no matter how expensive. The adjusting screws are at the rear of the fence (using an allen key )... simply adjust and square the fence relative to the blade with a decent engineer's square, re-tighten the screws and it's done. I use a dry lube for the sliding arm and it keeps it sliding smoothly.I've lost count of the thousands upon thousands of precise cuts I've made with this saw and even the original equipment saw blade is still cutting quite well but a replacement isn't expensive so I might invest in a new one after all those hours of work it's done. After four years of use I can thoroughly recommend this machine.EDIT: July 2020. If you have difficulty seeing the laser line on the wood outdoors in bright weather, try switching on the built in LED work-light at the same time. It actually helps see the line when the light is strong making it difficult to see.I've just been building a Catio and working outdoors and as it wasn't a precise structure I actually used the laser quite often and I found that it was easier to see when switching on the work-light at the same time.

These are the first impressions.I dont know how I can ask it to Amazom.co.uk. I could not find any channels to complain about. The instructions are miserable. is a characteristic of Chinese products, and this is a Chinese product. For those who have no practice with these machines will be complicated. The parallell guide / ripping fence (instructions book, overview nº 26 piece) was very misaligned and did not do the 90 degrees with the blade of the saw.In a piece of 8-inch (20cm) pine wood, the deviation was 2mm.Did I even have little luck?As long as I remember, I'll only go back to buying small-value products on Amazon. It was very difficult to adjust the machine.Powerful engine. Saw blade just for rough cuts.

Would be great if it was accurate.

The goodLight and very easy to carry, surprising depth of cut 92mm, blade stops quickly, handle is comfortable to use.The not so goodSliding part of fence keeps coming loose after just a few cuts. Instructions are poor although not a problem if you've used a mitre saw before. The badCuts were out of square by 2mm across a 90mm piece of timber. The fence was slightly curved, right side did not align with left so couldn't be adjusted square with the blade. Blade wobbles about 1mm left to right. The arms on the pull out work supports were corroded in places, although I wouldn't have minded if the saw was accurate.Maybe I was just unlucky with this but I returned it for refund as It now seems too good to be true for the price.

But I wanted something more precise and better quality to after a lot of reading around and ...

I previously had an Evolution Stealth 210mm/1500W mitre saw, which I used for about 3 years and it was OK but could never really calibrate it to cut in 90 degrees. However, I must say that it was indestructible. But I wanted something more precise and better quality to after a lot of reading around and having an approx.. £200 budget I decided to buy the Metabo KGS 254. First impressions – it is a very well made saw with lots of very useful extras, e.g. Extendable base, laser guide (which actually works and is accurate – tested it multiple times) and integrated work light. It is a large saw it requires some space but it does most DIY jobs with easy. The motor (1800W) is powerful and not too noisy (my old Evolution Stealth with a less powerful motor was much louder). The blade that comes with the machine is good quality and produces clean cuts (so far I only tried soft wood so not sure how it delivers with hardwood). The reasons why I decided to give 4 stars and not 5 are the following: the saw was not set up properly when it arrived and it took some time to square it but after doing it worked well. I also has to adjust the vertical angle of the blade, which is fine but the instruction manual is not really much help with these adjustments. I had to figure a few things out as this saw has its own system of making adjustments to the angel of the blade. And finally the dust extraction is not well designed. This is the greatest issue with the saw in my opinion. I have a Karcher wet and dry vacuum which I bought for dust extraction and work well with my other tools but for some reason even when the vacuum is on and suctioning the saw spews sawdust in all direction. I would really like to get some help with how to resolve this as aside from this fault when fully squared this is a very good piece of kit.

Great value saw with pro features

A very good saw for the price, laser is good in most lights. Saw has some really nice features you would only ever see on a big expensive top of the range saw. Fast saw and almost cuts 100mm wood, id say 1mm off. Dust extraction with festool is ok, not all material is caught, not sure to festool, but design of the plastic that catches the material, but not a big deal if working outside. The blade is good, not the best, but no stock blades are good. Better to upgrade blade to a Freud pro blade. Machine is not made in Germany that is a disappointment, made in China.
